Styling the waves of art ~ Indian Ocean by Shailly
One fine day I was browsing through some of the offerings in a gift-shop in Damansara Heights when I stumbled upon some ornate and striking artsy clutches that totally caught my eye!
Little did I know that these unique handbags, named Indian Ocean by Shailly, are designed by an artist right here in KL who has turned her talent for art into wearable pieces of fashion!
Batik&Bubbles as ever curious and avid lovers of art and fashion, met up with Shailly Gupta at her studio in the leafy enclaves of Bukit Tunku to hear more about her journey and of course have a gander at her beautiful clutches!
It turns out that Shailly, who hails from Delhi, India has lived as an expat in KL for the past 10 years. She initially worked for Ebay and then decided to leave the corporate life and focus on her art and paintings.
Shailly then decided to transform her art also into handbags and clutches and by 2015, Indian Ocean by Shailly was born!
What I personally love about Shailly's clutches is that each bag seems to tell a story which has been inspired from art and from Shailly's travels. From the fresco collection that is representative of the symmetrical art of the Middle East to the bags that feature waves near Mount Fuji in Japan, you can really feel as if you've been transported to another country when holding one of these precious collectibles!
In particular, it was interesting to hear Shailly's story about one piece of art which comes from her namesake collection, that tells her story about being an expat in general. This has resonated with many expats here in Malaysia and she now has made a handbag from this piece of art. You can learn more about that here:-
As Shailly told us, these limited pieces are not purely a fashion statement, she often finds that her clients are basically people who appreciate and love art. They choose to wear these bags as a continuation of their personality, incorporating art into their daily lives!
There is a careful process of deciding which art series she will use on her bags and what type of colours she will use in her collection. Shailly told us that she spends a lot of time on deciding on the shape of the bags, the type of chain that is used and even the red silky interiors of each bag has been thought through in a precise manner!
We particularly love the jewel toned clasps that really seem to have a personality of their own, giving that extra pop of character to each bag!
It is rather amazing that one can buy a painting and also buy a clutch of the same design. It really is a perfect excuse to wear your art every day!
That's why each piece feels so personalised and special and we are so excited that YOU our readers now have a chance to own one of these gorgeous pieces of art! Do stay tuned for our upcoming contest on Facebook and Instagram where you can land one of these beautiful pieces, guaranteed to spice up your artsy life!
Many thanks again Shailly for showing us around your studio and sitting down with us to learn more about your art. We look forward to hear more, and see what other coveted pieces of wearable art you will create for us art aficionados in the future!
